The browser on Roids: Flock 2.0

Flock

For years we put up with a stale environment in the web browser front, Internet explorer being the old work horse and FireFox being a little dot on the horizon.

Now however it seems we are flooded with web browser alternatives, we have Internet Explorer 8 on the way, FireFox, Chrome and the new kid on the block… Flock.

When I say the new kid on the block, I mean the new thug on the block, this will be they guy that will take the lunch money from other kids, the guy that will give atomic wedgies to any kid that looks at him funny.

Move over FireFox and I.E, Flock is a browser on steroids.

So what Hot ?

OK, they have everything. End of.

No seriously, Flock seems to centered around the whole social networking and the 2.0 content sharing love thing.

People Sidebar:A cool feature that allows you to gather you favorite people from you favorite social network. Or a cool feature that allows you to stalk people to your hearts content. (Cough Cough - Facebook, Myspace)

Facebook

Media Bar: This feature allows you find photos and videos from your favorite sites. (Cough Cough - YouTube, flickr etc.)

My World: This feature seems like a good idea, it seems it is a mash up of feeds, friend status updates and video and photo updates. Kinda cool, at least it stops you mindlessly browsing around, hey maybe that’s what people like though!

Anyway the list goes on, find out more about their features on their site.

…And what’s Not ?

This is a kinda grey area, I’m sure some bugs will come out of the wood work, for now a major concern seems to resource use and memory use. This browser could be a resource hog, unless you have a super duper computer. If not well get over it. When you think about what the browser is doing its a fair compromise.

Some questions

Will users really use all of the social networking features ?

Will they not pref ere to go to the actual sites ?

Is this a shot across the bow of web portals such as MSN and Yahoo ?

Funky South’s verdict:

Flock is an awesome browser, I think they have captured and encapsulated the content sharing era we are currently in. They seem miles ahead of other web browsers in terms of design, usability and technology.

Will I use it ? Maybe ! I do feel I may prefer to go to the the actual sites. But its still a cool tool to have all that juicy information and gossip on your browser.

I think I could become quite fond to it.
